From the Premier League to the CPL: Comparing Football Betting Trends in Europe and Canada

Canada’s sports betting market is almost the same age as its homegrown football league, the CPL, which puts it in stark contrast to Europe, and particularly the UK. The English Premier League and its continental equivalents cast a huge shadow across global football, and are arguably the most mature and significant spaces in which the beautiful game is played. Likewise, there’s a very mature sports betting market in the UK, with tightly regulated equivalents in many other European nations.

Despite this divergence, there are a few things to learn from comparing how things stand on either side of the Atlantic Ocean from a sports betting perspective.

Market Depth

With its large and established sports betting market, Europe offers breadth and depth that are almost unmatched worldwide, let alone in Canada. This results in a diversity of betting markets for each and every game, made possible because so many metrics are tracked and variables accounted for. European bettors are therefore a very savvy, connected bunch, although at the same time it’s quite intimidating for newcomers to get in on the action because of the intricacies of the market.

Canadians who participate in trusted sports betting here and on other domestically licensed sites can, of course, access similar depth in well-established, much-followed European leagues like the EPL. For CPL games, there may be less market coverage, for the simple fact that there’s a lower volume of wagers on the table, and it doesn’t make sense for bookmakers to go all-in to the same degree. But in terms of accessibility for first-timers, it perhaps has the upper hand.

Information Asymmetry

As mentioned, the amount of information available in European football betting markets is immense, and in turn this means the markets are highly efficient, able to react quickly to the latest news on team changes and injuries. If you’re betting on the Premier League, the oversaturation of data is both overwhelming and makes it much harder to find a pricing edge, since bookmakers should have every corner covered.

Over in Canada, and specifically in the case of betting on CPL games, there’s much less market efficiency because there’s less data collected and analysis carried out. In turn, this gives bettors more wiggle room, and someone who has local knowledge about an upcoming match, such as one that might be disrupted by weather or impacted by the sheer amount of travel time involved for a visiting team, might be able to spot untapped value in the market.

Betting Volume & Crossover Trends

While the EPL remains the single most-wagered soccer league in Canada alongside UEFA competitions, the CPL is a growing niche market. The CPL's summer-dominant schedule provides a distinct seasonal advantage, allowing it to capture wagering volume during the European offseason when major leagues are inactive.

Wherever you’re based, betting on big-hitting European leagues like the EPL or more niche equivalents like the CPL is almost certainly possible, so long as sports betting itself is a legally sanctioned activity. And more interest in football in all its forms can only be a good thing.
